A hearing aid that suddenly goes quiet, sounds muffled, or whistles is one of the most common reasons patients walk into our Rawalpindi clinic. The instinct is often to assume the device is finished and a costly replacement is needed. In most cases it is not. As an audiologist, my first job is not to sell a repair — it is to diagnose why the hearing aid stopped performing, because the fix is frequently simple, same-day, and inexpensive. This guide explains the real clinical causes of hearing aid failure, what can and cannot be repaired, and why a proper diagnostic repair is different from a quick fix at a market counter.
Why Hearing Aids Stop Working — The Five Clinical Causes
The vast majority of hearing aid problems we see at Ideal Hearing Care Center fall into five categories. Identifying the correct one is the whole battle — the wrong assumption leads to an unnecessary replacement.
1. Earwax (cerumen) blocking the receiver
This is the single most common cause of a dead or muffled hearing aid. The receiver (the tiny speaker that sits in the ear canal on RIC and custom aids) has a wax guard that clogs with cerumen. When it blocks, sound drops or disappears entirely. Patients often believe the aid has failed when the real problem is a 20-rupee wax filter. We clean the receiver, replace the wax guard, and the aid works again — usually in minutes.
2. Moisture and humidity damage
Pakistan's monsoon humidity and summer heat are hard on hearing electronics. Perspiration, humidity and condensation corrode the microphone ports and receiver over time, causing intermittent cut-outs, static or complete failure. Moisture damage is the second most common issue we treat in Rawalpindi. Many 'dead' aids recover fully after professional vacuum drying and de-humidification — which is why we never write off a water-affected aid without testing it first.
3. Receiver (speaker) failure
Receivers are wear parts. After heavy use, or following wax and moisture exposure, the receiver itself can fail. On modern RIC hearing aids the receiver is a modular, replaceable component — we swap it in the clinic and re-verify the fitting the same day, without sending the whole aid away. On custom in-the-ear aids the repair is more involved and may require the manufacturer.
4. Microphone blockage or failure
Dust and debris clog the microphone inlets, muffling sound or causing distortion. Microphone covers can be cleaned or replaced. True microphone failure is less common but does happen and usually needs a manufacturer-level repair.
5. Tubing, domes, filters and physical wear
On behind-the-ear and RIC aids, hardened tubing, split domes, and worn wax filters cause feedback (whistling), poor sound, or discomfort. These are consumable parts replaced routinely at service visits. Battery door and charging-contact problems also fall here, especially on rechargeable models.
Repairable vs. Needs Replacement — An Audiologist's View
Not every hearing aid is worth repairing, and an honest audiologist will tell you when a device has genuinely reached the end of its life. Here is how we decide.
Signs it is usually a simple, worthwhile repair:
- The aid is under 5-6 years old and was performing well until recently
- The problem started suddenly (points to wax, moisture or a wax filter)
- Only one aid of a pair is affected
- It is still within or recently out of manufacturer warranty
Signs it may be nearing end of life:
- The aid is 6-8+ years old with repeated, recurring faults
- The manufacturer has discontinued parts for that model
- Your hearing has changed significantly since the aid was programmed
- Repair cost approaches the price of a current entry-level device
Even then, replacement should follow a fresh hearing test — not a sales pitch. If your hearing has shifted, a new aid must be programmed to your current audiogram, not your old one.
What a Clinical Repair Involves at Our On-Site Lab
Ideal Hearing Care Center runs an on-site repair lab that services all major brands. What makes a clinical repair different from a quick counter fix is diagnosis and verification, not just a clean-up:
- 1Inspection under magnification of the receiver, microphone ports, tubing and shell
- 2Listening check with a stethoclip to confirm the fault the patient reports
- 3Cleaning, wax-guard and filter replacement, and vacuum de-humidification as needed
- 4Receiver, tubing, dome or battery-door replacement where indicated
- 5Re-verification that the aid still meets your prescription — ideally with Real Ear Measurement
That last step matters. A market repair may get an aid making noise again, but without verifying output against your audiogram you cannot know it is delivering the right sound for your hearing. We check.

Preventing Repairs — Daily Care Your Audiologist Recommends
- Store the aids in a drying/desiccant case every night — essential in Rawalpindi's humidity
- Wipe the aids with a dry cloth daily; never use water or alcohol on the body
- Check and replace wax filters every 4-8 weeks, or sooner if sound is muffled
- Remove aids before showering, swimming, applying hair products or sleeping
- Keep rechargeable charging contacts clean and dry
- Book a professional clean and check every 4-6 months
A sudden drop in one hearing aid is far more often a 50-rupee wax filter than a dead device. Before replacing, get it checked. Free repair assessment at Ideal Hearing Care Center — Call 0328-0000510.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Aid Repair in Rawalpindi
My hearing aid suddenly stopped working — is it dead?
Usually not. A sudden loss of sound in one aid is most often a clogged wax guard on the receiver or a moisture issue — both are quick, same-day fixes. Replace the wax filter and dry the aid in a desiccant case overnight; if it is still silent, bring it in for a free assessment before assuming it needs replacing.
Do you repair hearing aids bought from another shop or city?
Yes. Our Rawalpindi lab services all major brands regardless of where the aid was purchased, including aids bought abroad or in other cities. We will diagnose the fault, tell you honestly whether it is repairable in-house or needs the manufacturer, and verify the fitting afterward.
How long does a hearing aid repair take?
Most common repairs — wax-guard and filter replacement, cleaning, de-humidification, receiver swaps on RIC aids, tubing and dome changes — are completed the same day, often while you wait. Repairs that require the manufacturer (certain custom-shell or microphone faults) take longer and we give you a realistic timeline up front.
Is it worth repairing an old hearing aid or should I replace it?
If the aid is under about six years old, worked well until recently, and the fault is wax, moisture or a wear part, repair is almost always worthwhile. If it is older with recurring faults, has discontinued parts, or your hearing has changed significantly, a fresh hearing test and a newer device may serve you better. We advise based on diagnosis, not on making a sale.
Does humidity in Pakistan really damage hearing aids?
Yes — moisture is one of the top two causes of hearing aid failure we see in Rawalpindi. Monsoon humidity, heat and perspiration corrode microphones and receivers over time. Nightly storage in a drying case dramatically reduces moisture-related repairs and is the single most effective habit for extending an aid's life here.
